For many years, the Elks Ladies Auxiliary of Gulfport, led by Mrs. Joyce Castor and a host of others, would raise money along side the Elks and present a scholarship to either Deaf students or students entering fields that would benefit the Deaf. These studies may include Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, or other related fields.
Wanting to make sure that the program continues, seed money was donated to de l'Epee in December 2009, to create a trust fund for future awards.
The mission remains to provide educational opportunities for the Deaf or for students wishing to serve in the Deaf community. Scholarship awards are generally $500 and are available for application year around.
Requirements for application include:
* Must be a Mississippi resident residing in the seventeen counties of the Diocese of Biloxi
* Student must be enrolled in a Sign Language Interpreting Program at
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
or
* Enrolled in a Deaf Education Program at University of Southern Mississippi
or
* Be a Deaf student enrolled in an accredited college, major is not relevant.
